This project aims to develop a multi-purpose ultra-broadband photonic signal processor (PSP), integrated with electronic-photonic transmit / receive circuitry, which overcomes the bandwidth bottleneck of electronic signal processing and is capable to manipulate an optical bandwidth of more than 35 nm. This is an entirely new and disruptive approach, merging for the first time on-chip nonlinear optical signal processing and high-speed analog optoelectronic front-end technology. The PSP, and advanced system concepts and algorithms using its unique capabilities, shall be demonstrated and evaluated in two exemplary applications:1. Breaking the fiber nonlinearity limit of current single-mode fiber systems by implementing optical phase conjugation on the PSP;2. Demonstrate wavelength- and mode-conversion for future space-division multiplexing systems by co-integrating the PSP with modulators and/or coherent receiver frontends on a single electronic-photonic integrated circuit.
